Nyota Ing'arayo school is literally a shining star in Mombasa.
Nyota Ing’arayo means Shining Star in Swahili. Growing from humble roots as a small daycare centre, Nyota Ing’arayo has developed into a fully registered primary school offering quality education to children from the Kongowea area of Mombasa, Kenya.
Kongowea is a low socioeconomic status area. The parents of our children pay school fees according to their individual circumstances and means – an ongoing, precarious balancing act for them – as they juggle low-paid work, or no work, alongside wanting their children to access full-time, meaningful education.
Integral to our school community is supporting the whole child. Access to clean water and nourishment is a basic human need and right; through the generous support of many of our overseas sponsors our school now has a clean water filtration system and a feeding programme providing breakfast and lunch daily for our children. Education does not take place in a vacuum; we know that when children are well-nourished and properly hydrated their brains work more effectively – only then are they ready and able to learn.

Our school currently has over 300 children from Pre-school to Year 6 (ages 3-12), and 12 full time teachers, overseen by our School Principal.
Ongoing sponsor support ensures every child benefits daily with the provision of breakfast and lunch.
Nyota Inga’arayo is constantly striving to improve and offer more to our children as we know the difference this makes to their lives now, and the potential opportunities for them later in their lives.

Our Story
Nyota Ing’arayo began as Precious Vision Daycare in the Shauri Yako village within the Kongowea area, Mombasa. After many years striving to develop improved education opportunities for its local children, Nyota Ing’arayo succeeded in becoming a fully registered school where today over 300 children now access full-time education.
Our People
The children who attend Nyota come from a wide range of backgrounds – some have parents who work – often within the wealthier Nyali district- as labourers, housekeepers and drivers; for others they may have an absent parent and/or parents who don’t have employment. Whatever their circumstances, our parents want their children to attend school and our children want to be here every day. Our children are resilient, are happy, are a community.
Our Purpose
Although primary education has been universal in Kenya since 2007, accessing public schools remains a huge challenge for many children, especially within Kongowea. Nyota Ing’arayo aims to offer a comprehensive education to all its children regardless of status or background. Fundamental to their learning is the provision of daily nourishment and access to clean water. We believe that all our children should be given the opportunity to learn and thrive regardless of their circumstances.

Support needed
Maintaining the school facilities, teacher salaries, buying and cooking food, all require significant funds beyond the collection of school fees.
100% of any donation goes directly to our school to help fund and maintain all these necessary outgoings, and in doing so ensures that our school and our children can continue to grow and thrive.

Feeding Programme
Daily breakfast and lunch for our children consists of porridge and a protein such as beans or pojo with rice or ugali.
Teacher Salaries
Our school employs 12 full time, trained Kenyan teachers. Small class sizes and consistent teachers create the conditions for effective teaching and learning.
Maintenance and Renovations
Keeping our school environment clean, safe and conducive to learning requires ongoing maintenance.

It costs £3.5 (€4) per month to feed a single child.
In addition, larger or one-off donations play a vital role in funding our teachers and supporting ongoing maintenance along with future renovation projects.
